Know the Harvest

PRODUCE Biligiri Black Pepper is a bold, fruity spice that comes from the forested slopes of BR Hills, Karnataka — a region known for its rich biodiversity and traditional forest farming. Grown on native pepper vines and ripened on the plant, this pepper is hand-harvested with care and has never seen the nozzle of a chemical sprayer or fertiliser. It’s pungent, full-bodied, and carries hints of fruit — a true reflection of the land it comes from.

India is home to some of the world’s finest pepper varieties — from the fiery Karimunda and Panniyur in Kerala to the complex and globally prized Tellicherry peppercorns. The Biligiri Hills offer their own distinct expression: smaller in size, but intensely flavourful, shaped by altitude, native shade trees, and forest-based farming.

How to Use

RECIPE Black Pepper Mushroom is a quick, easy and delicious dish that really heroes Black Pepper! Cut the mushrooms into thick slices and saute until golden brown on both sides. Mince the garlic and combine with soy sauce, oyster sauce (optional), black pepper, jaggery, and warm water to make the sauce. Pour the sauce over the mushrooms and simmer until it thickens. Serve hot, garnished with spring onions and sesame seeds.

GROWERS Kethegowda & Sannarangegowda

ABOUT Kethegowda and Sannarangegowda are indigenous Soliga growers from the Biligiri Hills, whose deep knowledge of the forest and dedication to sustainable farming anchor our work. Their everyday actions—training fellow producers and mentoring youth—remind us that caring for the land is both an ancestral responsibility and an urgent necessity.

CONTEXT For half a decade, our partner coffee growers have gently nudged us to venture into pepper. Across the Western Ghats, coffee is often intercropped with pepper, and most of our growers rely just as much on pepper as they do on coffee for their livelihoods. What can we say — we’re slow, organic, and it’s taken us longer than it should have to bring you our very first lot of this incredible spice. This particular crop comes from BR Hills and grows alongside our high-altitude, shade-grown Arabicas.

FAQs

Have questions? We’ve got answers! Here are some of the questions people have had about Biligiri Black Pepper. If you have more, check out our FAQs page or feel free to contact us!

Are all your Field & Forest produce organic? -

Our Field & Forest produce is grown without the use of chemical pesticides, fertilisers, or herbicides. While not all items are certified organic (certification fees are prohibitively expensive for our partner producers), we follow organic practices to ensure the highest quality, sustainable produce. All our produce is tested and lab results are published on our Sourcing page.

How long will these be good to use? -

For the best flavour and freshness, we recommend using our Field & Forest produce within 2 years from the harvest. We source in small batches to ensure that you always receive the freshest produce from the latest harvest.

What is the best way to store these? -

To maintain freshness, store your Field & Forest produce in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight - an airtight container in a dark cupboard will keep them at their best.
